ASUU Insists On Strike as Ngige pleads with union

Dr Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment, has appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call off its four-week strike before it reaches its expiry date on March 31.

It reported on Tuesday that Ngige had met with the leadership of the ASUU at a closed-door meeting.

When ASUU alleged that the government had failed to fulfill several long-standing agreements during their lengthy discussion, which lasted many hours, the minister accused them of fabricating evidence.

When asked about the ASUU requests in an interview, Ngige said they were being evaluated and that he would meet with representatives from the union as well as the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council next week.

He said:

“We have discussed quite a number of things and I am urging them to brief their members and call off the strike before the expiration of the one-month duration of the warning strike. By Monday, we would have dealt with some of the issues they are talking about and return to them for further discussion. We will meet again with them and the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council and we will take it from there.”
