INEC Postpone 2023 elections over late signing of Electoral Act

Following the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari’s late signature of the Electoral Act, the Independent National Electoral Commission has moved the 2023 Presidential election from February 18 to February 25, 2023, according to the Associated Press (retd.).

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of the commission, made the announcement during a press conference in Abuja on Saturday.

He said that the presidential and National Assembly elections would now take place on Saturday, February 25, 2023, and that the gubernatorial and state houses of assembly elections will take place on March 11, 2023, as previously announced.

Yakubu added that the revised date was set to ensure that the elections notice was published at least 260 days before the polls. According to the Electoral Laws, the notice must be published at least 260 days before the elections.

The chairman of the INEC further said that the election instructions will be released in due course.

According to the new Act, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) shall publish the notice of election at least 360 days before the elections.

Several organizations had urged the President to sign the law before February 22, 2022, in order to avoid the necessity for the National Institute of Standards and Technology (INEC) to amend the date in accordance with the Act.

Buhari, on the other hand, signed it on February 25, 2022.
