The Federal Senate has dismissed the request of President General Muhammadu Buhari for amendment of section 84 (12) of the Electoral Act which prohibits appointive political office holders from contesting for election from party primary level without withdrawing.
The request which was terminated after the Senate Leader, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi member of rolling Party (APC) from Kebbi North gave rise to the lead on Wednesday (March 9, 2022) during debate for the second reading of the bill.
The House voted and kicked against it.
General Muchammadu Buhari as at last week wrote the Federal Senate seeking an amendment of section 84 (2) subsection 12 in the (2021) Electoral Act.
In the letter sent to Senate by the President, he stated the correction is important as the passage constitutes a fundamental flaw and leads to the disenfranchisement of political officeholders.
