The mayor of the Polzemysl in Poland, Wojciech Bakun, has criticized Italy’s Matteo Salvini for his remarks in support of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s continued occupation of Ukraine.

A video shows Bakun criticizing Salvini during a visit by thousands of refugees displaced by the Ukraine crisis on Tuesday evening.

For years Salvini, the leader of the Italian League, has been a staunch supporter of Russia’s Putin, who has often been seen wearing a T-shirt emblazoned on one side and making a name for himself on social media.

At the meeting with Wojciech Bakun, Salvini urged the Italian politician to look at the damage done by the man he called his friend to Europe.

Mr Bakun said since the start of the 14-day war, 50,000 people had crossed the border every day.

But in response Salvini told Mr Bakun that there was no more respect between them, and thanked him for his words.

Mr Salvini walked around the refugees apologizing in English.

Some of the refugees responded to Salvini by saying, “You have every chance of attacking Putin now, while another is shouting that we do not need your sympathy.”
