The German Foreign Ministry says Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock will hold special talks with the coup forces in Mali as the future of German peacekeepers in Mali is being debated.

A statement from German Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Annalena Baerbock traveled to Mali on Tuesday to meet with coup leader Assimi Goita and Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop.

Baerbock will later visit Niger to hold private discussions with President Bazoum Mohammed and Foreign Minister Hassoumi Masaoudou.

The statement said Baerbock’s goal was to get a clear picture of what was going on in Mali, both politically and security-wise, and to assess the role of German peacekeepers in Mali.

Germany has at least 1,100,000 peacekeepers in Mali called MINUSMA.
