UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on the international community to support Niger in its fight against terrorists who pose a threat to the country and its neighbors.

Guterres, who praised Niger’s military prowess, said the international community must help strengthen them, adding that equipment and training were needed.

He said Niger could not wage this war on its own, citing organizations such as ECOWAS and the African Union as leading the way in promoting peace on the continent.

But Guterres said the G5 Sahel group, which includes Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Chad, had suffered casualties in coups in some of its neighbors over the past two years.
