INEC-Independent Nigerian Electoral Commission has warned the country’s political parties to ensure that the next general election is completed within a month, or they will be barred from fielding candidates.

Festus Okoye, the director of public awareness on the election plan, said that since February 26, they have presented the 2023 election plan which instructs the parties to hold primary-elections within 4 days. from April to June 3 this year.

Okoye said according to the schedule, any run-off election held these days would be illegal and would not be tolerated by the commission.

The director said they had informed all 18 registered parties of the law in accordance with Section 82 of the 2022 Electoral Act.

Okoye said some of the parties have already started working on the law, and the Electoral Commission has sent its officials to monitor the election process.

It should not be forgotten that the APC in Zamfara State has lost the governorship, federal and state seats in the 2019 general elections due to irregularities in the primary elections.
