The Congolese army and civil society organizations say rebel fighters have murdered scores of civilians in a town in the eastern region of Beni.

An army spokesman told AFP that more than a dozen people had been killed in Saturday’s attack, while the Red Cross said the death toll had risen to 24.

But the Kivu Security Tracker, an organization that monitors security and violence in eastern Congo, says at least 27 civilians have been killed.

ADF fighters have long been accused of killing thousands of civilians in the restive eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
