DG, NILDS’ Democracy Day Message

On this momentous occasion of Democracy Day, we celebrate the strength and resilience of our democracy, which has been the bedrock of our nation’s progress and development.

Beyond the celebration, June 12, symbolizes Nigerians’ desire for democracy, justice, and respect for the will of the people. It represents the struggle against military dictatorship and the fight for the recognition of the people’s choice in governance.

Our democracy has come a long way since its restoration in 1999. We have witnessed the peaceful transition of power from one administration to another. This is a testament to the maturity and wisdom of our citizens and the tireless efforts of those who have championed democratic principles.

However, we must not be complacent. Democracy is not a destination but a continuous journey. It requires our collective participation, vigilance, and dedication. As we celebrate the progress we have made, we must also recognize the challenges that lie ahead.

We are confronted with issues that demand our attention, such as insecurity, economic disparities, corruption, and social unrest. But let us remember that democracy empowers us to address these challenges through dialogue, cooperation, and inclusive governance. It is through the strength of our institutions and the engagement of our citizens that we can build a stronger and more prosperous nation.

The National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies is committed to promoting the values of democracy, fostering legislative excellence, and strengthening democratic governance in Nigeria. We strive to provide knowledge, research, and capacity building to lawmakers, policy analysts, civil society organizations, and the public at large. Together, we can build a society that upholds the principles of transparency, accountability, and the rule of law.

On this Democracy Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to the democratic ideals that bind us as a nation. Let us embrace diversity, tolerance, and respect for one another’s rights and opinions.
