June 12: Onolememen urges Nigerians to be Resilient.
Former minister of works, Dr (Arc) Mike Onolomemen, in his message to Nigerians, particularly Edo State Citizens, said looking back before 1999, Nigerians must appreciate the democratic journey so far. He enjoined everyone to reflect on the sacrifice MKO Abiola particularly made that has allowed everyone to be able to celebrate this day in total freedom.
He said, “today, being June 12, Democracy Day, I celebrate with every Nigerian, particularly the great people of Edo State. When we look back to where we are coming from, prior to 1999, we have every reason to be thankful. The eras of military interventions and jackboots are gone. Although we are not where we envisage we to ought to be, but no one can discount the sacrosanct of government by the people and for the people, which is democracy.
“I cannot easily forget the memorable day on June 12th, 1993, when I filed out with millions of Nigerians to cast my vote for what has been adjudged one of the freest and most credible elections in the annals our history in recent times. The tragedy of the aftermath of that annulment cannot be explained as MKO Abiola and his Wife, Kudirat, with others, lost their lives during the struggle to retrieve the stolen mandate.
“It therefore behoves on us to carry on the ideals, the banals, of this very day by being resilient and steadfast as MKO Abiola once was. We must have sobber reflections because of the enormous sacrifice some have endured. We do not have alternatives.
“So on this day, I wish all Nigerians a happy democracy day celebration.”
