A stalwart of the All Progressives Congress from the southeast, Hon Otuwe Kalu Oji, on Wednesday, insisted that APC need unity to be able to win elections in Abia state.

He attributed the clashes of interests among the major leaders of the party in the state as the reason the APC recorded abysmal performances in the concluded 2023 elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The former Abia State House of Assembly candidate of the APC for Ohafia North constituency seat during the 2023 election in a statement on Wednesday, tasked the leadership of the APC to go back to the drawing board and embark on genuine reconciliation of party members in the state, so as to put APC on the right track to win majority number of political offices in future elections in Abia.

According to him, “Everybody should forget about personal interests and work for the interest of the party. If the party leadership want to give ticket, let them look around for men and women the needed capacity and popularity to secure victory for the APC. And not those that lacks people’s will and cannot deliver majority bulk votes for the progressive party.

“They should jettison personal interests and let us work for party’s interest. Because, this was one of problems the party had during the last elections. We had so many people who worked against APC. We have internal crisis in our party. We have many factions of APC in Abia.

“Today, you hear Ikechi Emenike faction, next day, you will hear Uche Ogah faction. All these are unhealthy to the desire of APC to win elections and form a government in Abia state. The aggrieved members should bury their differences and embrace each other as one united family”.

He commended the deputy speaker of the house of representatives, Rt. Hon Benjamin Kalu and other progressive-minded members for their current efforts to bring stability in the fold of the All Progressives Congress in Abia.

Oji said, “The deputy speaker is doing a good job. Last month, he convened APC stakeholder’s meeting at his Abuja residence and was attended by critical party leaders and stakeholders, where issues bordering on peace and unity was emphasized.

“I really commend Kalu on that. He’s trying to make sure there’s peace in APC in Abia state. Not only in Abia, entire southeast geopolitical zone. Because the election that is coming by God’s grace, will not be as usual. Southeast will make a good impact as far as APC is concerned.

“The recent peace parley called by deputy speaker is a right step in a right direction. Peace must be restored in the state chapter of the party to enable members go into future elections, win and assume leadership in Abia and national level”.

Recall that crisis engulfed the Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress following the outcomes of the concluded parallel governorship primaries held in May 2022 by the party’s national leadership that saw emergence of two candidates for the APC.
