Farming Season: Kogi Commissioner for Agric, food security orders for preplanting activities

Kogi State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr Timothy Ojoma has directed for the commencement of preplanting activities ahead of this years’ farming season.

Mr Ojoma gave the directive while speaking with newsmen in Lokoja.

He said agriculture has gone beyond seasonal activities in other clime noting that with the right approach, farmers can operate through out the year.

The Commissioner said the weather prediction so far is favourable to farmers across the country promising that the Ministry will continue to update farmers if there is new development.

He said the Ministry is mapping out farms across the state and would engage small scale farmers directly in the proposed fifteen thousand hectares farm land.

According to him, the state government will intervene in the aspects of tractorization and other farm imputes at subsidised rate, noting that two to three hectares of land will be allocated to a farmer as the case may be.

He explained that the Ministry is targeting abundance food production for the state and the country at large.

 

Ojoma said the State Government will take advantage of the rivers in the state for irrigation to ensure all year farming emphasising that rice, cassava and maize would be targeted at the first Agric intervention.

He commanded Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for giving the Ministry a free hand to operate saying discussion is ongoing with development partners across the globe including world bank and African Development Bank to add value to Agric sector.
