Shafas, spoke during the 12th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Multipurpose Co-operative society of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), which held at Government Secondary School (GSS) Gwagwalada, on Saturday.

He said despite primary school teachers in the FCT has been making sacrifices to impact knowledge on the pupils, payment of teachers has been epileptic.

“Within late last year to this year, the salaries of teachers in the primary school section has been epileptic. And why I said it’s epileptic,? the JAAC will be held after two weeks, but teachers can’t access their salaries, which is pathetic,” he said.

He said it is a wrong perception that people living outside the FCT about every civil servants working in Abuja, including teachers are living well, while the renumeration of LEA primary school teachers in the territory has been poor.

He said the area council chairmen have been running away from their responsibilities over teachers welfare, saying the council has refused to have an interface with the union when teachers tenders their demands to them.

“The area council chairmen only recognize us when we embark on strike action, that is when they will remember that primary teachers exist. And part of this council chairmen were among those that employed the teachers into the system. And why now running away from their responsibilities? He asked.

He added, “as a union embarking on strike is not a good thing. And you will recall what the FCT minister Nyesom Wike said some few weeks back where he promised to pay 40 percent from the 100 percent 25 months minimum wage arrears of our members, while the council chairmen should pay 60 percent, in which the minister asked them to pay within three months, but as I speak, the three months will elapsed by end of this month, as some of the chairmen were only throwing part of the money into the LEA’s account in which the union asked the LEA secretaries to withheld those money,” he said.

Also speaking, the chairman of the Multipurpose Co-operative society of the FCT NUT, Comrade Mahmud Ameh Enemakwu, said the Co-operative society has achieved a lot including 60 percent ownership of 33kva transformer for stability of power supply gearing towards operational efficiency.

” And we have also achieved sustainability of e-payment of all loans irrespective of the amount involved, dividends and prompt refund of wrong remittance is maintained,”he said.
