You Are Doing Nothing Compared To Other Govs – Group Hits Alia
Makurdi, Nigeria – Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has come under fire for his claims of exceptional governance, which he bases on the payment of salaries and the construction of a handful of roads in the state capital, Makurdi. Critics argue that Alia’s self-congratulatory statements lack substance and fail to account for the achievements of his contemporaries in other states.
In a statement released to journalists, Dennis Agema, President of the Network for Transparent Governance (NTG), emphasized that Alia has not compared his administration’s performance to that of other governors who assumed office around the same time. A fact-check indicates that when measured against these peers—who often operate with fewer resources—Alia’s accomplishments are notably lagging far behind.
The statement reads:
“Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has recently taken to bragging about his administration’s achievements, claiming exceptional performance based on the payment of salaries and the construction of a few short roads in Makurdi. The governor who also boasts that he must do a second term whether anyone likes it or not, has however never attempted to compare himself with other governors who came to power at the same time as he did.
“A fact check reveals that Alia’s narrative is more a reflection of self-promotion than an accurate representation of the realities on ground. In fact, when placed alongside the achievements of his contemporaries who receive less allocations than he does, Alia’s performance pales into insignificance.
“Benue State enjoys significant monthly federal allocations since President Bola Tinubu removed fuel subsidy. This financial advantage should ordinarily empower the state to achieve remarkable progress; yet, Governor Alia’s claims of high performance ring hollow. It’s essential for him to acknowledge that other governors, who assumed office around the same time, have made substantial strides in their respective states, effectively utilizing their resources to foster development and improve the lives of their citizens.
“Take, for instance, Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, who has been recognized as one of the best governors in Nigeria. In less than two years in office, Otti has implemented transformative policies and projects that have significantly impacted the state’s economy, infrastructure, and overall governance. His achievements stand as a benchmark for good governance that Alia would do well to emulate.
“Next, we have Governor Mohammed Umar Bago of Niger State. Renowned for his road renovation initiatives and investments in agricultural equipment, Bago’s administration is enhancing the livelihoods of farmers and providing vital infrastructure. His dedication to improving the quality of life for his constituents underscores the importance of a responsive and responsible government. These are qualities that are lacking in Alia. Benue which is the food basket of the nation is receiving much money but the governor is doing nothing about agriculture.
“Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State, Alia’s next door neighbour, serves as another example of effective governance. Now in his second term, Sule has consistently delivered on his promises, focusing on infrastructure development and social welfare. His ability to navigate the challenges of governance while achieving tangible results stands in stark contrast to the complacency exhibited by Alia. Contract for the construction of the underpass in Makurdi was awarded before that of Lafia, but the one in Makurdi has no hope of completion before 2027.
“Another example of a true performer is Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State who has earned accolades for his exemplary leadership and innovative approaches to tackling the challenges facing his state. Zulum’s commitment to rebuilding Borno post-conflict has made significant waves, showcasing what can be accomplished with vision and dedication.
“In light of these examples, Governor Alia must confront the reality of his administration’s shortcomings. Good governance transcends the mere act of making speeches or indulging in personal luxuries. Reports have emerged about Alia’s purchase of a private jet worth N11.2 billion ($7 million) and the acquisition of various other private assets within a remarkably short period in office. Such expenditures starkly contrast with the pressing needs of the people of Benue State, who require attention and action on issues like education, healthcare, security and infrastructure development.

“It is time for Governor Alia to engage in a truthful self-assessment. He should compare his achievements with those of his peers, not only to acknowledge where he falls short but to inspire a renewed commitment to the people of Benue State, rather than merely basking in a false narrative of success.
“The people voted for Governor Alia believing that he is a priest so he would serve them sincerely, but he has turned out to be the direct opposite of what he was supposed to be. The manner the governor indulges in falsehood betrays the cassock and clerical collar that he often wears. This is why the Catholic Church forbids its priests from joining partisan politics. Alia has clearly shown that he is not a priest”, the statement concludes.
